New partnership combines industry expertise, and cutting-edge technology to deliver scalable affordable housing solutions across America
The partnership between SURE and Banyan Infrastructure will empower community lenders and nonprofits to more efficiently finance sustainable multi-family housing and community buildings.
Banyan Infrastructure, a leading project finance software platform, and SURE, a joint venture between nonprofits Inclusive Prosperity Capital (IPC) and Housing Partnership Network (HPN), are excited to announce a unique partnership that will help to lower energy costs and create more sustainable, affordable housing and community infrastructure for Americans across the country.
SURE — Sustainable Underwriting for Resilience and Efficiency — works to create standards and provide technical, financial solutions for the housing and municipal markets. This new partnership combines SURE’s deep expertise in community lending, affordable housing, and energy finance with Banyan Infrastructure’s comprehensive, purpose-built project finance software.
Powered by Banyan Infrastructure, SURE services will provide community lenders with end-to-end capacity to enhance their existing credit programs, from program definition and pipeline development to origination, underwriting, compliance, reporting, and secondary market access. Together, SURE and Banyan Infrastructure aim to build a replicable framework that simplifies the complexity of sustainable lending for community development financial institutions (CDFIs) and other community-focused financial institutions so they can focus on creating the most impact for their communities.
“SURE enabled Raza Development Fund to get to yes faster on a decarbonization deal in East L.A.,” said Annie Donovan, president and CEO of Raza Development Fund, a participant in the partnership’s initial cohort. “SURE is built for innovation, collaboration, and scaling and will help community investors build the ecosystem for green lending faster and better.”
Using Banyan Infrastructure’s purpose-built platform, SURE will work with CDFIs and borrowers to create credit memos and digital workflows by gathering all data in one secure digital portal, in addition to supplying resource lists for underwriting, and closing and pipeline management flows that support CDFIs as they expand their lending operations.
SURE and Banyan Infrastructure have a history of leadership in sustainable lending and housing. The influx of capital brought on by the $27-billion federal Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund has sparked new opportunities and increased urgency to address long-standing challenges within the industry. As the pool of available capital grows, CDFIs need proven programs, a data-informed pipeline of qualified borrowers, and the tools and documents to execute loans reliably. SURE and Banyan Infrastructure offer a unique tech-enabled service to approach this historic moment with the confidence and clarity needed to catalyze our community outcomes.
“This joint venture with Housing Partnership Network reflects our shared vision of creating sustainable, affordable housing nationwide,” remarked Kerry O’Neill, IPC’s Chief Executive Officer. “SURE’s partnership with Banyan Infrastructure allows us to streamline processes, enhance transparency, and equip CDFIs with the resources needed to meet the growing demand for resilient and affordable housing and community facilities.”
“SURE technology and scalability is informed and shaped by lender and developer practitioner needs and experience on the ground. This platform and partnership are poised to accelerate the volume and velocity of green financing to make homes and communities more livable, affordable and energy efficient,” added HPN CEO and President Robin Hughes.
“SURE is designed to provide the tools and frameworks that community lenders need to bridge the gap between affordable housing and clean energy finance,” said James McIntyre, IPC’s Chief Strategy Officer, and SURE leadership team member. “We’re creating a replicable, tech-enabled solution that simplifies the complexities of financing these projects, ensuring that community lenders have the resources and capacity to make lasting, meaningful impacts.”
“The resources we are creating through this partnership cannot be found anywhere else,” said Will Greene, CEO at Banyan Infrastructure. “Combining deep, thoughtful expertise on affordable housing and sustainable infrastructure with innovative technology that allows lenders to do more, faster is a key ingredient in ensuring the next phase of America’s sustainable infrastructure buildout benefits American households.”
CDFIs can access these one-of-a-kind resources by applying to join the cohort today. For more information, contact the team at info@GoSURE.org or visit GoSURE.org.
